Fox News' Pro-Giuliani Conflict of Interest
By Cliff Kincaid
Accuracy in Media (http://www.aim.org/aim_column/5461_0_3_0/) Thursday, May 17, 2007
Rudy Giuliani's much-publicized but misleading put-down of Ron Paul during Tuesday night's Republican presidential debate should have been tempered by a report that Saudi Arabia, the country that spawned most of the 9/11 hijackers, has been one of Giuliani's lucrative foreign clients. However, Fox News questioners Chris Wallace and Wendell Goler did not bring it up.
Perhaps this can be explained by the fact that the same Associated Press story that named Saudi Arabia as a Giuliani client listed News Corporation, the parent company of Fox News, as another Giuliani client. This AP story, which was not disputed by Giuliani or News Corporation, was carried (http://www.foxnews.com/wires/2007May15/0,4670,GiulianiapossBusinessABRIDGED,00.html) on the Fox News website.
This writer had raised questions about Fox News' co-sponsorship of the debate, based on the fact that the company had a relationship with Giuliani when he was mayor of New York City. But now we know that the relationship has continued into the period of time that Giuliani has been planning a presidential run. It is an obvious conflict of interest.
It was during a discussion of foreign policy that Paul, a Texas congressman, identified U.S. involvement in the Middle East, especially in Iraq, as a factor in the 9/11 attacks. Giuliani pounced on that, saying the claim was worse than absurd. "Rudy's Wrath" was the headline as Fox News proclaimed Giuliani the winner of the exchange. However, the Fox News text-message poll, with 40,000 votes, gave Paul 25 percent over Giuliani's 19 percent. Mitt Romney came in first with 29 percent.
Giuliani was the first Republican candidate to come on Fox News after the debate and talk about his performance. Co-host Sean Hannity wanted to focus on Giuliani's comments on 9/11 and his attack on Paul. Later, Michael Steele, Maryland's former Lieutenant Governor, was on Fox News, declaring that Giuliani had destroyed Ron Paul. "It's done," Steele said of Paul's campaign. It wasn't mentioned that Giuliani had campaigned for Steele when he ran for a Maryland Senate seat.
The exchange with Paul over 9/11 might have been seen in a different light if Hannity had asked Giuliani about why, according to the AP report, his firm represented Saudi Arabia. But that was a taboo topic.
Equally important, it turns out that Paul's point-that the 9/11 attacks were linked to U.S. involvement in Iraq and the Middle East-was factually correct. Osama bin Laden's 1996 "Declaration of War against the Americans Occupying the Land of the Two Holy Places" (http://www.meij.or.jp/new/Osama+bin+Laden/jihad1.htm) specifically mentioned the situation in Iraq, blaming the U.S. for the impact of economic sanctions on the Saddam Hussein regime. Bin Laden accused the U.S. of "aggression" against Iraq and the record shows that his anti-Americanism was motivated, at least in part, by the U.S. military presence in Saudi Arabia.
Yet, Giuliani claimed "I don't think I've heard that before," in reference to Paul's citation of some of these facts. One would think that "America's Mayor" and "Mr. 9/11" would understand the genesis of the attacks that took almost 3,000 American lives.
Despite the facts of the case, Fox News correspondent Steve Brown said it was a matter of "Mission Accomplished" for Giuliani because of his exchange with Paul. Of course, "Mission Accomplished" has become associated with a war in Iraq that has no end in sight. Paul has been against the Iraq War from the beginning. He made the point, as he had during the first debate on MSNBC, that the war had cost the GOP control of Congress. Senator John McCain tried to insist that Republicans had lost Congress because they had been spending too much federal money. He didn't explain why the public had replaced the Republicans with bigger spenders from the Democratic Party.
Conceding Paul's point about 9/11, however, doesn't mean that the U.S. should withdraw from the Middle East, as bin Laden demanded, or as Paul advocates. But U.S. involvement in the Middle East should be debated and discussed. The Texas Congressman noted that President Reagan inserted U.S. troops into the civil war in Lebanon but that when 241 lost their lives in a suicide bombing he withdrew them, citing the irrationality of the region. The unanswered question of the debate was what President Reagan would do about Iraq. Only more debates, with war critic Ron Paul, will smoke the candidates out on this critical issue.
There is no issue more important than American involvement in the Middle East. At least in this regard, the Paul-Giuliani exchange was welcome and long-overdue. We need more of this, not less. But Fox News seems determined to run Paul and other candidates out of the race.
Steve Doocy of Fox News called Ron Paul the "Sanjaya" of the Republican presidential debate, a reference to the American Idol contestant many believe stayed in the national competition for too long. But this is reality turned upside down. Fox News didn't want its audience to know the facts behind the exchange. Especially with his controversial Saudi and other foreign connections, Giuliani may end up looking like the real "Sanjaya" of the race.
The bottom line is that Giuliani's applause-winning response to Ron Paul was beside the point. Giuliani should have been on the spot, but he wasn't.
Indeed, Giuliani was completely spared any tough questions about his controversial dealings with foreign clients. Neither Wallace nor Goler brought up the growing controversy over the Giuliani law firm representing a Spanish company that is privatizing a Texas road in the proposed "NAFTA Superhighway." The same firm, Bracewell & Giuliani, represents Citgo, the oil company owned by Venezuela's anti-American ruler Hugo Chavez.
Fox News had attempted to limit participation in the debate to the so-called "serious" candidates before a public outcry forced all of them to be included. That ploy was seen as an effort to cement Giuliani as the frontrunner. After the debate, Fox News correspondent Carl Cameron was again trying to limit the field, declaring that the "second-tier candidates" had slowed down the exchanges. He implied that candidates like Paul, Duncan Hunter and Mike Huckabee should be left out of future debates.
Fox News has a reputation as a conservative news channel and many Republicans rely on it for news and information. But its handling of this debate raises serious questions about the channel's commitment to being "fair and balanced." It seems to be emerging as an arm of the Giuliani-for-president campaign. Honest conservatives should demand better coverage.

The PTB believe their own tale of how dumb the American Public is. Watching the debate - anyone with any sense about them could see the truth in Ron Paul's words. If he doesn't get chosen as the Republican candidate, perhaps he can be a write-in?
Think about it. Ron Paul as president will dismantle all of their cherished delusions they worked so hard to perfect. They will never allow it, just as they didn't allow it in Mexico.
Of course Diebold will have the last word. That's why it was ushered in so completely. They want to leave nothing to chance.

Stir the pot, one must see what Ron Paul could achieve if elected.
If we fully adopted his policies, would the U.S. better weather the storm brewing? Or simply collapse under the retreat?
The U.S.A. could take it's place beneath the foot of TPTB.
Afterall the Queen did set her royal foot on our soil not too long ago, we could all turn Chinese if he is elected.

He's merely using the facts presented in the 9/11 commission report. He can't go mainstream and talk about unproven theories although I woudn't be surprised to see him re-open an investigation on 9/11 if he were President. He's doing this perfectly - getting the attention he needs without paying for the exposure out of his limited funds.

He replayed Puals exchange with Guilianni and commented on how wonderful it was for Guilliani to speak out against Paul and how Guilliani practically knocked Paul out of the race. The spinners are early at work. Then he replayed his own post-debate exchange with Paul and and consulted with "an expert" on how Paul is unAmerican as he was stating that America is to blame for 9/11.

Fox is trying to do damage control, they've got a big stake in Rudy and are trying to stay on message no matter how rediculous they look. It's good, they're losing ground and their credibility as a news organization is dropping.
Gotta get some sleep
That CNN clip was excellent, Mr. Paul should be unstoppable with that theme.
And Yes, the inter-viewer was fazed.
I was surprised he didn't thank Mr. Paul for enlightening him.
CNN and Fox are supposed to be on different sides of the fight, yet both of them are going after Paul. This just further reveals the massive consolidation of power...and we the people, are on the opposite side.
Every so ofter an opportunity comes along we get opportunities for defining moments that allow us to make our place in history by changing the status quo for the better. Ron Paul is our opportunity; our hope. We all need to get together and stand behind this man. It's time to take the fight to them. This is our chance. Let's make the most of it.

Well, the CNN interviewer also mentioned that Guillani was the front runner, and that Mr.Paul would have to wait forever for a correction from the front runner.
People just don't want to talk about those astounding results Mr. Paul put up on Fox news channel.
You would think CNN would jump all over that one.
Or atleast somebody who was Fox's alter ego.

CNN and Fox are attached to the same strings.

Ron Paul Builds Campaign on the Web
By Fred Lucas

(CNSNews.com) - If unscientific online polls were a determining factor, Rep. Ron Paul of Texas would easily be a top tier candidate for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination. But they aren't -- and he isn't.
Despite coming in first place in a post-debate poll on MSNBC and in other online surveys, Paul hovers around two percent or less in surveys conducted by Gallup, Harris, Zogby and other leading polling firms.
At the same time, however, he has a large network of "meet up" groups across the country, heavy traffic on his campaign website and new-found media attention since comments during a Fox News Channel GOP debate this week that appeared to blame U.S. foreign policy for the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
The statement, which drew a strong response from former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, might have torpedoed the chances of a top-tier candidate, but Paul still came in a close second in an online poll immediately after the debate.
This indicates a large body of supporters, Paul campaign spokesman Jesse Benton said Thursday.
"Ron Paul has more passionate supporters who are more likely to send in text messages and emails into the polls," Benton told Cybercast News Service. "That may skew it, but we're not going to apologize that our supporters are more passionate than Rudy Giuliani's supporters."
Benton said the Paul campaign has not engaged in an organized effort to encourage people to vote in online polls. He also scoffed at accusations from bloggers that Paul supporter were spamming Web sites. "This is not a handful of people. This is a grassfire movement," he said.
Paul, 71, is a 10-term Republican House member and was the 1988 Libertarian Party presidential nominee. He stands apart from the rest of the GOP field, having opposed the war in Iraq from the beginning. He also has called for the immediate abolition of the Internal Revenue Services and other federal programs, declaring himself the "true conservative" in the race because he wants to return the GOP to its non-interventionist roots.
Paul's campaign claims more YouTube subscribers than the campaigns of any other presidential candidates. (A YouTube subscriber is someone who gets automatic email alerts on a topic of their choice when a new video on that topic is posted on the popular video-sharing site.) Also, more Ron Paul videos are posted on YouTube than all but two of the GOP candidates, Arizona Sen. John McCain and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.
In another indication of massive online interest, "Ron Paul" is also the top search on Technorati, a blog search engine that says it indexes more than 75 million blogs. On Friday, Ron Paul was at the number one position on Technorati, ahead of the likes of Paris Hilton and American Idol.
Paul has $524,919 on hand, according to his most recent campaign filing, far less than the millions raised by the top-tier candidates, McCain, Romney and Giuliani. At the same time, when compared to the six other second-tier GOP hopefuls, the Texan raised the most money during the first quarter in 14 states, including Florida and Texas, and the second-highest amount in Montana and New Hampshire.
Paul's campaign website has significantly higher traffic than those of the other second-tier candidates, and rivals the hits on the McCain, Giuliani, Romney sites, according to Alexa.com, a site that monitors web traffic.
Paul has come under heavy scrutiny since Tuesday night's debate, when he answered a question about whether his non-interventionist foreign policy view should change after 9/11.
"The reason they attacked us is because we were over there," Paul responded. "We've been bombing Iraq for 10 years."
On Thursday, the Michigan Republican Party's chairman, Saul Anuzis, circulated a petition to members of the Republican National Committee insisting that Paul be banned from future debates because of those comments.
But in the view of Chuck Muth, president of the Washington-based Citizen Outreach, the 9/11 remarks brought Paul more attention than he has ever had.
"Among Ron Paul supporters, it won't hurt him at all," Muth said in an interview. "If people thought he had a chance of winning, it might worry them. But Ron Paul supporters are backing him to make a statement."
Though Muth believes Paul's foreign policy views are not practical during the war on terror, he believes the congressman brings a lot to the race. However, he said he would like to see the candidate focus less on the war and more on issues popular with Republican voters like getting rid of the income tax.
"When there is a vote in the House of 534-1, he's usually the one," Muth noted. "There is a huge network of support for Paul. Ron Paul has spent years developing a national following."
Even being the target of the party frontrunner during the debate will only boost Paul status. "It was a fair shot for Rudy Giuliani to take. But Ron Paul should turn the tables on him and point out how he's for limited government and Rudy Giuliani is not."
'Neo-con' criticism
Meanwhile, the popular conservative blog Little Green Footballs on Wednesday took Paul's name off the list of presidential candidates in its online poll because, it said, "his supporters are deliberately spamming our polls to make it appear as if Paul has more support than he does."
That decision prompted more than two dozen angry emails - many obscene - from Paul supporters, the blog said Thursday. Little Green Footballs said that Paul backers had not voted multiple times, but had rather sent out emails and posted a link to the poll on their own websites, urging people to vote for Paul.
"You have to look at where the criticism is coming from. It's a neo-con site," said Paul spokesman Benton. "We've had a flood of response after the [9/11] comment, about 75 percent positive and 25 percent negative saying Ron is a disgrace and we should just keep bombing people."
Paul has recently won unscientific polls on the political website PajamasMedia.com, but the site said it had removed him and others from recent polls because they did not meet the criteria it had set - at least one percent in Gallup (http://www.emergingdemocraticmajorityweblog.com/donkeyrising/archives/000729.php) polls - to compete.
Support on the web is the key to any grassroots campaign, said Tracy Weston, an expert on the Internet and politics and professor at the University of Southern California's Annenberg School of Communications.
"The candidate is either organizing this and everyone knows to hit the phones and web to build up the buzz, or groups that are committed to him create the traffic," Weston told Cybercast News Service . "He's a contrarian candidate and has staked out positions some hardcore Republicans and even some hardcore Democrats would like. A distinctive campaign at the bottom tier can build. How far he goes depends on how good he is."

Quick question; Do I have to be a registered Republican to vote for Ron Paul in the primaries?

YES. You may only vote in the primary of the party that you're registered with.

YES. You may only vote in the primary of the party that you're registered with.
That depends on where you live. Here in Texas you can vote in any primary you wish as long as you haven't voted in a different primary in a given time. (I think it is two years.)
I've voted in R and D primaries at different times. I'm a member of no party.
On another note, the free coverage Dr. Paul is receiving is great. Here is more on CNN. http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/05/18/martin/index.html
You have to love free advertising for a great candidate. I've been a fan of his for years (used to live in his district). This is all very exciting to me.

So if I started a party that didn't require registration, I would have a leg up on the competition?

Hannity was at it again today...more Ron Paul bashing.
BTW - for anyone who missed Paul on CNN last night with Wolfe, check it out. Wolfe kept trying to corner him (unsuccessfully). Ron was phenomenal.

Did anyone catch the end? Blitzer said on national television that the next time he interviewed Rudy Giuliani that he would ask if he would considering apologizing to Ron Paul. Lets see if he keeps his word. Perhaps I will have to email him too just to make sure he doesn't forget.
I personally think a petition is in order to Giuliani and the media for smearing Ron Paul for citing the 9/11 Commision. It was borderline slanderous and no one has bothered to clarify the fact that Giuliani was mistaken. Sure everyone on the internet knows, but the brain dead zombies that only watch TV don't, and their the majority of the vote come elections.

It would be a waste of time, IMO. Rude-y won't apologize. He'll only twist it back around.

R Paul may well be the candidate chosen by TPTB to be the Yeltsin of the US. Someone to put the heat on the US admin and make it seem like we are in a new era of open Government. So long as he supports the position in quotes he may well seem eons better than the bad bunch pretending to run the show right now. But caw canny.
