In short, if do pirates show up and you find yourself overmatched, you do as follows:

Step #1. turn tale and run
Step #2. get the rest of your herd
Step #3. come back
Step #4. lay down an ass-whuppin'

And remember to keep an eye out for the reptiles. They will take advantage of any opportunity!
