A TSA approved pistol went off in the cockpit of a commercial airliner. Watch this>

Whoops. Another bureaucratic victory.

I don't care how empty that gun is ... I wouldn't make a habit of running my hand across the front of the muzzle like that guy was doing.

Obviously Normy Minetta's hirelings put a lot of thought into pilot safety. :sarc:

As I understand it, an HK USP 40 which has an external hammer was the "culprit". Not sure if I believe the scenario as described. HK USP has a fairly long DA trigger pull and in order for the pistol to discharge, the pilot would have had to really jam the pistol back into the holster...or the pistol was fully cocked to begin with?

the pistol did NOT "go off"
Firearms do NOT, as a rule, spontaneously discharge.
pressure was applied to the trigger by a human being, with obvious result.

Has anyone here actually watched the video? It is quite plain what happened. When he reinstalled the lock, the pistol was slightly ajar and the lock bar went in front of instead of behind the trigger. When the pistol was seated back in the holster, the lock bar worked the trigger.

I don't understand your comments in light of this.

Rewatched the video...I suppose it could have happened the way they describe, but the pilot should have noticed the hammer being cocked (double action trigger) as he pushed the gun into the holster...if he was paying attention to what he was doing. I think there is more to this story than is being told. I do think the padlock idea was a bad one.

Yeah, the rest of the story is that someone who had minimal training with a firearm, and who probably rarely shoots at the range, is carrying one inside the cockpit of a plane. I'm sure if He had to pull it in an emergency, he would probably blow the co- pilot away or something!

Call me naive but that contraption looks like an accident waiting to happen, oh wait...one already did.
