I know this topic has been brought up before and there is alot of wild speculation. So what I am asking is not only for you all to say how many ounces of silver/gold one will need when TSHTF but also your reasoning for it. If you want to throw out a guess, do it but let us know that you are guessing. I am really curious to see what other people think. I have no idea personally.

No one knows, everyone has a different situation. A safe bet would be "as much as you can get your hands on".

I like the 10 oz Au, 500 oz Ag numbers as a bare minimum. My reason for this would be that any amount less would likely be insufficient to provide any sort of aid in a prolonged SHTF-S. It's also related to the amount of G/S that the average non-GIMmer would have, and how much more metal than them you would hold in comparison.

I see this as an impossible question to answer... each person's situation and expectations are different.

10/500 sounds good, but for who and to serve what purpose?

I remember watching the movie Blazing Saddles, the bad guys got stuck at a desert toll both and Slim Pickins saying,

"Somebody has to go back and get a $hit load of dimes ! "

Pre '64 is best.

1 oz of silver per person per day. Perhaps a little less if a few family members live together.

This was the standard wage of a day laborer in the USA back in the 20's......then Henery Ford offered the $5 day.....my grandfather worked on the farm and made $1/day ......moved to Detroit MI to make $5 a day. $5 Face Value of 90% silver coin is about 3.5 ozt silver. $1 FV is about 0.715 ozt.....

That's why I say 1 ozt/day/person.

I would say that it is up to you. What do you plan to do with your ag/au wtshtf? For some ppl that $ would be better served in food preps or firearms.

It seems your estimates are logical on the face of it. You fail to condsider
though that productivity since those times has probably increased
output per hour by a factor of perhaps 10. Ford's increase to
$5 a day for his workers was an explicit acknowlegement of
huge productivity gains already achieved by the 1920's.

Given the huge volume of goods availiable in the modern economy,
it may be that a silver dime per day per person may be adequate
to meet basic needs. That is, if silver becomes the currency
of choice upon the paper collapse. That also assumes that
there will still be a lot of goods to trade even if production
is severely cut by the depression. 10% of all goods produced
today is still far more than was produced in 1910.

Oh lord - are we going to get this one weekly????

Here we go again..............>

I have run two threads like this in the last two years - Addison Wiggins, said once everyone should have 1000 ounces fo gold - most of us can not afford that! I sure can't - so I asked some of the financial writers the same question - and always asked them about a bare minimum - how much was enough to get by on - and from Chapman, Puplava and others........never gotten a direct answer in two years - no one can answer the question..........cause everyone's situation is different.......and what they all said was - "just buy as much as you can" - obviously, the more you have, the better.........and having any will be better than having none - which is what most people will have because only about 2% of the population ever invests in PMs.

Sure - I would love to have - say 1000 oz gold and 50,000 silver.........I'd also like to have a harem.....but it ain't gonna happen! <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
However, here is what I posted as a note in one of my bi-weekly newsletters, its a little off-topic but it might fit (if not, I'll shutup!).........><o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
ANYWAY - ON THE BOARDS THERE WAS AN ARGUMENT GOING ON ABOUT WHETHER OWNING <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:stockticker>GOLD</st1:stockticker> <st1:stockticker>AND</st1:stockticker> SILVER WOULD ACTUALLY MAKE <st1:stockticker>ONE</st1:stockticker> RICH........BOTH SIDES HAD VALID POINTS, <st1:stockticker>AND</st1:stockticker> BOTH SIDES <st1:stockticker>ARE</st1:stockticker> GUESSING <st1:stockticker>TOO</st1:stockticker>.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
AFTER MANY NIGHTS OF <st1:City><st1:place>READING</st1:place></st1:City> - I FINALLY POSTED SOMETHING THAT <st1:stockticker>SORT</st1:stockticker> OF CALMED THE BOARD. HERE IS ROUGHLY WHAT I SAID............<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
BEING RICH IS RELATIVE.....WE GAUGE OUR RICHNESS IN COMPARISON TO OTHERS........IF SOMEONE <st1:stockticker>HAS</st1:stockticker> A MUCH BIGGER HOUSE <st1:stockticker>AND</st1:stockticker> <st1:stockticker>CAR</st1:stockticker> THAN US, WE <st1:stockticker>SEE</st1:stockticker> THEM AS RICH! (OF COURSE, THIS DOESN'T MEAN THEY HAVE ACTUALLY PAID FOR EITHER - OR <st1:stockticker>ARE</st1:stockticker> NOT IN DEBT UP TO THEIR EYEBALLS! I DRIVE AN OLD <st1:stockticker>CAR</st1:stockticker> - BUT ITS TOTALLY PAID FOR - ITS MINE! IF WE <st1:stockticker>GOT</st1:stockticker> <st1:stockticker>ALL</st1:stockticker> THE <st1:stockticker>CARS</st1:stockticker> OFF THE ROADS THAT WERE NOT TOTALLY PAID FOR - THINK HOW MUCH EASIER <st1:stockticker>AND</st1:stockticker> FASTER DRIVING WOULD BE - BUT I DIGRESS........)<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
IF THE DOLLAR CRASHES <st1:stockticker>AND</st1:stockticker> THE MARKETS TANK, AS MANY FEAR THEY WILL........<st1:stockticker>AND</st1:stockticker> IF PEOPLE HAVE TO PAY BACK THEIR DEBTS.......THEN, ACCORDING TO A SURVEY DONE........MUCH MORE THAN 50% OF THE POPULATION WOULD BE BROKE <st1:stockticker>AND</st1:stockticker> TERRIBLY IN DEBT, MOST OVER $100,000!!<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
OF THE OTHER 50% (OR MUCH LESS REALLY) MOST HAVE THEIR MONEY IN DOLLARS WHICH WOULD LOSE MOST OF THEIR VALUE - HOW MANY HAVE ANY <st1:stockticker>GOLD</st1:stockticker> OR SILVER (EXCEPT, PERHAPS, A COIN A DEAD RELATIVE LEFT?) OF COURSE, YOU HAVE NO WAY OF KNOWING - BUT HOW MANY PEOPLE ON YOUR BLOCK DO YOU THINK HAVE <st1:stockticker>GOLD</st1:stockticker> OR SILVER? <o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
HOW MANY IN A THREE BLOCK RADIUS??? NONE?? <st1:stockticker>ONE</st1:stockticker>???<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
HOW MANY HAVE 50 OUNCES OR MORE??<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
HOW MANY HAVE 20??<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
HOW MANY HAVE 5????<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
SO IT IS POSSIBLE (I DIDN'T SAY PROBABLE, BUT POSSIBLE) THAT WHEN THE DOLLAR <st1:stockticker>AND</st1:stockticker> MARKET TANK - <st1:stockticker>AND</st1:stockticker> <st1:stockticker>GOLD</st1:stockticker> <st1:stockticker>AND</st1:stockticker> SILVER <st1:stockticker>ARE</st1:stockticker> THE BEST, <st1:stockticker>AND</st1:stockticker> POSSIBLY ONLY <st1:stockticker>REAL</st1:stockticker> STORE OF WEALTH...........THAT..........IN COMPARISON TO THOSE AROUND YOU.........YOU MIGHT END UP, BY COMPARISON, BEING RICH!<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
I CAN <st1:stockticker>SEE</st1:stockticker> THE POSSIBILITY OF A TIME IN THE <st1:stockticker>NEXT</st1:stockticker>, SAY 10 YEARS, AS THE HOUSING MARKET TANKS, <st1:stockticker>AND</st1:stockticker> THE BANKS <st1:stockticker>ARE</st1:stockticker> STUCK WITH A LOT OF HOUSES NO <st1:stockticker>ONE</st1:stockticker> <st1:stockticker>HAS</st1:stockticker> ANY MONEY TO BUY, WHERE YOU CAN BUY ANY HOUSE IN THE COUNTRY YOU WANT, WITH A HANDFUL OF COINS.............ITS NOT SCIENCE-FICTION..........IT USED TO BE THAT WAY!!<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
SO - AS THE MARKETS GO UP <st1:stockticker>AND</st1:stockticker> DOWN - <st1:stockticker>AND</st1:stockticker> <st1:stockticker>BEAR</st1:stockticker> MARKETS DO THIS - ITS NORMAL........<st1:stockticker>AND</st1:stockticker> THIS <st1:stockticker>SORT</st1:stockticker> OF MANIPULATION IS NORMAL IN ELECTION YEARS (<st1:stockticker>THO</st1:stockticker> NEVER THIS BLATANT!) <st1:stockticker>AND</st1:stockticker> AS PEOPLE LOSE THEIR SHIRTS <st1:stockticker>AND</st1:stockticker> SOCKS <st1:stockticker>AND</st1:stockticker> STOCKS.........<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
GO COUNT YOUR COINS.......<st1:stockticker>ARE</st1:stockticker> ANY MISSING? NO.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
<st1:stockticker>AND</st1:stockticker> THIS IS ONLY A TEMPORARY SETBACK.........<st1:stockticker>AND</st1:stockticker> WE'RE NOT TAKING ANY WORSE A BEATING THAN ANYONE <st1:stockticker>ELSE</st1:stockticker> IN ANY OTHER MARKET - EXCEPT WE STILL HAVE EVERY SINGLE COIN WE BOUGHT.....<st1:stockticker>AND</st1:stockticker> THEY WILL COME BACK UP IN RELATIVE VALUE.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
<st1:stockticker>AND</st1:stockticker>, AT NIGHT - INSTEAD OF WORRYING ABOUT THE TEMPORARY PRICE OF PAPER <st1:stockticker>GOLD</st1:stockticker> <st1:stockticker>AND</st1:stockticker> SILVER........WHICH WE HAVE <st1:stockticker>NOW</st1:stockticker> PROVEN IS A MYTH OF MANIPULATION.............<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
INSTEAD, THINK ABOUT THE HOUSE YOU WANT TO BUY WHEN THE PRICES DROP <st1:stockticker>AND</st1:stockticker> THE METALS GO UP!<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
THAT'S A MUCH NICER WAY TO GO TO SLEEP.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
<st1:stockticker>AND</st1:stockticker>, FOR THE RECORD, I INTEND TO BUY THE WHITE HOUSE <st1:stockticker>AND</st1:stockticker> PAINT IT PURPLE!!!!<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
HAVE A GOOD WEEKEND <st1:stockticker>ALL</st1:stockticker>!!<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
HO<o:p></o:p>

If you can figure that out,.....let us ALL know!

Fact is "that" number will be different for every one of us because we all have a different set of circumstances. Are you single and already prepared with all your preps in a remote location? (probably best to be out in the sticks when TSHTF).

Or like most of us are you preparing with an extended family,.....most likely in several physical locations. I know in my case i've got to look at it like i'm the one the grown kids, ex-wife, and even friends will look to because i know most of them don't see the full extent of the govn'mt screwups and what that will propably mean down the road.

So you're probably best not to ever say: "i've got enough gold & silver now",......and instead keep on building as big a stash as your finances, situation, and time will allow!

Remember,........it'll be better to have more than you'll ever need, than to run out when you really need it!

I know this topic has been brought up before and there is alot of wild speculation. Chances are the government is going to confiscate at least bullion gold at some point- probably after driving the price down like it did last month. Bullion silver is a possibility as well.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to have some palladium/platinum on hand because they are less likely to be confiscated. 90% will probably survive as well. I like Franklin and Kennedy half dollars because they are less likely to be confused with coins currently circulating.

Gosh, I think you should have bags of fertilizer stored. :sarc:

Hide it in the bedroom and tell the better half you are better off because you doubt they will CONFISCATE it! Get the fresh stuff cause it also is hot and will really heat up the OLD bedroom - kind of kills desire - however, to purchase the real Precious Metals. :applause_:applause_:applause_:applause_

NO! NO! NO! CAN'T POSSIBLY HAPPEN!!!!

Not after two years of River Rat and myself bringing this up, merely as a possibility, (not a probability, mind you, merely a possibility to think about) and, at least myself, having my head handed to me countless times with huge posts about how I was an idiot and it could NEVER happen in a million years.........Blah! Blah! Blah!

When everyone else is right - and I am wrong - I stop pushing against the wind (or dare I say, hot air!)

SO NOT GONNA HAPPEN - NEVER - EVER - CAUSE WE'RE NO LONGER ON THE GOLD STANDARD AND TO DO SO WOULD ADMIT THE DOLLAR IS TOAST, BLAH BLAH BLAH..........NEVER, EVER, NO WAY NADA!!!!!!

This is why I also hoard copper plated lead on a brass tube containing powder. That's what .gov will get if they come to confiscate anything!

I was thinking about the price of ammo yesterday at work. If things really do get bad and prices skyrocket, you guys hoarding tons of ammo are going to one hell of a nice return on your investment. I imagine it will be pretty liquid too, there are plenty of people buying ammo now, that number will only increase of things go south.

What's the average shelf life for ammo? Can it be stashed for years without deteriorating?
