Sturdly

Background: I have a VISA with BAC that I pay off in total monthly so I can use their money and get the occasional extended warranty. Being of the thought that some banks may go down or the system may lock up I figured that prepayment would keep me in balance there and allow avoidance of any interest spike due to late or missed payments either my fault or theirs.
Action me: I was not going to be home to make my monthly payments the last few months (around $250 a month) so I had previously sent them enough extra to cover any purchases ($1000).
Action them: On Friday I get my mail and there is a check from them for my credit balance (about $250). No real explanation just a note that they were returning my balance but that the amount of the check was subject to any new charges and such. No problem for several months then bam, refund.
What's up with that?
