Does anyone know if you can disinfect a new well with colloidal silver? If so, how much should be used & for how long? Chlorine is recommended for 12 hours. Can you add c silver periodically for well maintenance? I've read about silver filters; where can you buy such a thing? Thanks!

The bacterial source of the well water is not going to go away because you dump some poison (silver is a poison) into it. Silver is poisonous to all things, just like any other metal in sufficient quantity. it is more poisonous to bacteria in the quantities that you would consume colloidal silver than to you. You can resist it and bacteria can not resist it. So unless you are planning to push the water back into the well by topping it off with your own colloidal mix you should not bother.
Chlorine is a relatively safe anti bacterial agent, just let the water sit for a day at room temperature and all the dissolved chlorine will convert to gas and escape into the air. (do not put it by your bed)

I use CS instead of Bleach in all of the 12ish wells I drill a year.
I use either of them the same way. as a SHOCK to the well to kill everything.
Pour CS or Bleach down the well, run all fausets for an hour, let sit overnight and then run for a day to purge.
Z, I don't believe that silver is a poison worse than Clorox. Yes, in that it kills everything the same as Bleach, but a better poison in my well than a chemically induced one.

Melbo with all due respect, do you think CS acts by magic?

No.
I think it acts by electricity, actually the conductivity of the charge.
Short circuits life's need to conduct said charge. Devastating to a micro but not much to a macro
I'm not a chemist nor an electician but have seen it work and I myself take it. If that counts for anything...http://survivalmonkey.com/forum/images/smiles/bananadance.gif
I have pretty much given up debating CS Z... Too volitile a topic.

Melbo: How much do you put it? (8-10 ppm strength). Thanks.

At the very least you will please the well-maidens. The tradition of tossing coins in the fountain originated in european paganism as offerings of silver to the the female spirits associated with springs and wells.
p.s. - LHS, pagan religious sensibilities would not be offended by a wet t-shirt photo, if you have one handy.

Infidel, I see what you are getting at. Been thinking about this for the last 9 months... hehe
What I do to disinfect my wells against is the agents introduced during the drilling process. The Rig is a messy beast and most of the time a new well drilled will have contamination.
Now the water that flows into the hole I have drilled and it's contaminants is beyond my control. But, bacteria has a tendency to accumulate over time.
Most rural communities advise that folks 'shock' their wells with bleach every year. I use the CS in my treatments as I think it's a more 'green' way of doing the same thing.
BTW, Since this thread was started, I had a well fail a bacteria test. I hadn't done anything to it after drilling. I added a gallon of CS 18ppm and the re-test came back negative.
