Take a good look at that chart. It's 50,000 now. It is expected to be 500,000 by September and 1.5 million by the end of the year.
The good news is that once their benefits end they will no longer be counted on the unemployment roles. The govt will then be able to claim the unemployment numbers are decreasing thus proving that the stimulus is working. Happy times for everyone! :10_1_19:
The only real question left unanswered is when do the people start using those pitch fork thingies?

The people will turn on each other as programmed before they turn on the ones who put them in this situation. We have a long way to go (down).

People depleting their unemployment benefits is what scares me most about our current situation. I'd rather see the States, and subsequently the People, continuing paying unemployment in perpetuity rather than see the unemployed roaming the countryside plundering what they can. Desperate people do desperate things.

I would be surprised if the Feds dont extend benefits even longer.
Right now unemployment lasts 79 weeks, which honestly is pretty ridiculous.

So in essence...you could then choose not to work and live off of those who do? Once that became a reality...everyone would want to live off of others and no one would be working.

No need for savings, the gov will take care of you, no matter how irresponsible you are... SPEND SPEND SPEND SPEND.
(which is what I suspect those getting these benefits are actually doing)

I totally agree-if we were still a capitalist state. BUT, since we're not.....FREE MONEY FOR EVERYONE!!!!!

Just to clarify your post... Current unemployment U3 counts people who are on state unemployment for the first 26 weeks only and these people are removed from the unemployment statistics in week 27, even though federal unemployment benefits kick in and add an additional 20 weeks. In many states, there is an additional (and harder to get) tier of unemployment that is good for 13 weeks, making a total of 79 weeks of unemployment benefits. These folks only show up in the stats for the first 26 weeks. After that, the gov considers them employed or not looking.
Basically, what I'm saying is that the unemployment statistics don't come close to counting all the people that would like to have a job.

Yes. Although most people can make a lot more money with a job than they can on unemployment. Regardless, I'd rather keep them pacified at home on a few hundred dollars a week than breaking into my home and stealing my stuff.

Agreed. I see crime going through the roof in the coming months and years. Can you say Argentina anyone?

I think the total depends on what state you are in, and how their laws are structured.
In Ohio, it is 79 weeks

On April 1, 2009, Ohio law was amended. Individuals may now receive up to 20 weeks of state-extended benefits after their federal-extended benefits expire, for a total of up to 79 weeks overall. These benefits are known as "Ohio Extended Benefits, or Ohio EB". The first payable week of Ohio EB is the week beginning March 15, 2009.
