Alan Greenspan was a member of the inner circle of Ayn Rand's associates, and has written several times about the advantages of returning to the gold standard.
I find it interesting how easily the lofty idealist turns to the dark side once corrupted by the ultimate power called fiat.
I can't help but wonder about this ultimate power. To be able to build civilizations, subjugate its followers, corrupt its politicians, rob a people, raise armies and to ultimately control or destroy all it purveys.
The single eye atop the dollar's pyramid provides a chilling reminder of the Eye of Sauron in JRR Tolkien’s classic novels entitled _The Lord of the Rings_. “Nothing escapes the all powerful eye,” Tolkien wrote.
In stead of the Federal Reserve, Treasury Department, IRS and IMF - maybe this insane currency nightmare should be renamed the Land of Mordor?

Halophyte -
I've often heard that the "Lord of the Rings" story represented the struggle against fiat, fractional reserve banking and bankers but I've never seen an analysis of it like I have of The Wizard of Oz. Does anybody know if this is true? Never read the books but likely will soon. (will be going to see the last of the movie trilogy).

I really doubt it...
Oz I can see...there are a lot of analogies in the story, and obvious references (yellow brick road, silver slippers, woodsman, scarecrow with no brain, etc, etc.) Also, the Oz story was written at a time when there was a big debate over monetary policy in the country (gold standard vs gold and silver bi-metallic standard).
This is not present in the lord of the rings, which feels not at all like a political commentary, but as an epic struggle of good vs evil...
I think that people can try to read almost anytihng out of a great work of literature, but that doesnt mean the author intended it....unless they can really fit all the pieces together, and there is a lot of relevant symbolism.
I think the main commentary that can be drawn from lord of the rings is how 'power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely'. Which I feel can be applied in general to any situation of power in the world, not just monetary policy.
Read the books, they are very good. I should read them again too. Havent read 'em since I was 7. :p

It's been twenty-five years since I read the books.
And there is nothing more "precious" than a pile of fiat.
Fiat created the "illusion of wealth" by robbing those it fools.
No king, no president, no political ideology can resist the power of fiat.
All proud empires built with the reality of gold and silver will eventually kneel to the illusion of fiat.
For those who create it, fiat is absolute power.
This, I didn't learn by reading the Trilogy ... it was many years later.

[/U]?
The "seeing eye" is usually related to the Masons ( who some loosely trace back to the Knights Templar) & their various offshoots.
Not being an American I cannot confirm this but the Founding Fathers ( some anyway) where apparantly Masons.
I have heard also that the Wizard of Oz was written as a comment on monetary debate & was presented in this format so that it would not be censored or canned before it could be released.

Maybe Greenspan is doing what he is doing intentionally and in some perverse way brings down fiat money to the point where we must return to the gold standard. Maybe he is TPTB's Trojan Horse?

I think Greenspin and Rand are soldiers in a war of ideas. After all they are members of the tribe that plays both sides.
What Greenslime will do depends on the objectives of TPTB.
