Does Anyone Still Find 90% Anymore?

Today I got a silver dime in change ( 1964 ), thats the second one in three weeks. Is anybody else finding any? I think its the coolest thing, its like FREE SILVER!

I found one the other day while I was getting petrol. I think the retirement home in Belize it still a ways off tho.

My wife brought back two silver coins from her job at the airport this past year. One of my theories is that when times get a little tough you are more likely to find some in circulation. This past year appears to have been an example of that. A friend who owns a convenience store w/ gas receives them regularly.

I used to find a piece once is awhile when i worked at the jewelry store.......last time a Washington quarter from 1964 about a month ago. They sneak in i suppose from an old roll that was stored and had maybe a few in it and nobody rechecks it before it gets sent out to merchants and such.

.......interesting that in 1964 most all coinage got pulled very quicky from circulation and most every coin from that time period shows very little wear.....YET......when going over a recent 90% bag purchase of halves there were a few VERY worn Kennedy halves dated 1964!

.........How'd that happen? You'd think even if they were overlooked for a short while they'd be spotted within a year or so.......and Halves never seemed to circulate much anyway........nobody wants them even today.

......yet these couple of 1964 halves are almost "slicks" and so must have circulated for a very long time........all the more so considering the unpopular denomination.

A couple of years ago I was at a garage sale, this was at an old German farmers house who had passed away. His family was selling all his old tools and stuff and the ladies handling the sale were all elderly. I found a couple of items and went to the table where they were taking the money. When I received my change I heard that distinctive ring and looked down and there were 2 old silver quarters.I didn't want to appear surprised so I coolly walk away and started to look for something else to buy. I found something for a quarter and went back over to the table, handed her a dollar, she reached into an old coffee can and handed me 3 more silver quarters. I was pretty thrilled but decided not to go back for more.

This is a rural area with a lot of old Germans that still live on old family ranches and farms. Never the less, everybody knows that coinage is no longer silver! These old ladies might have been an exception. The real old timers are dying off fast, but you can tell they have grown up with a completely different value system. Some of them have good size ranches that are now worth millions of dollars but they have lived simple lives. As soon as they die the families break up the ranch or sell it all.

From the 70's to the 90's I schearched for different banks and would go inside them and purchase their half dollar. Somehow half dollars fell from circulation as a usaulable coin. People tended to hoard them and when things got tough would roll them up and cash them in their locale bank instead of going out and spending them. I found many 90% coins in the rolls even some real jackpots! 40% halves were quite common, I bet you can still find 40% in the banks now.

Last time I got a silver coin was last summer. A 1964 quarter as part of change - but I always look!

Can I change the subject a little bit and ask how much silver you're finding at coin shops lately.

One I've been to is finding it very hard to get 90 and it sells out immediately when they do, even before they get a full bag. What's the temperature out there? Looks like more people are paying attention than we think.

Back in 1979/1980 90% were trading with a substanial premium over melt. I believe that it will again do this as the silver price heats up.

I know it's getting dangerous to say I know anymore but I think the 90s are the no brainer investment of the decade. Hardly any premium considering real money recognizable and tremendous upside potential.

I haven't found any 90% coins in my change for quite awhile. I do however, seem to get an old war silver nickel about once a year. Even the wheat pennies are scarce. I find maybe 5 or 6 a year, and that is it.

I have been searching for 90% and 40% halves for the last several months. I have found over 600 40% halves and about 100 90% halves. Dimes, quarters and nickles are extremly hard to find.

In several years of searching I've found one mercury dime. One.

I always buy all of the halves the bank has, but have never even found one 40%. I think the tellers are hoarding for themselves.

Not exactly "on topic", but over the weekend my wife tells me she got a dollar bill in change, and "its blue". I asked to see it. Yeah, it's blue all right...because it's from 1956!

Somebody either stole it or raided their parent's stash or something. It's actually in pretty good shape. I know, it's just a FRN, but it's an old one, so I won't be buying a cup of coffee with it anytime soon.

Thought it was a neat find.

Man, you guys are making me feel bad... in the mid through the late 90's I didn't like paper money at all and I'd always buy dollar and half dollar coins. I can't remember too much about the dollars, but boy did I ever get a lot of Franklin halves... and I had no idea they were worth anything. :frown:

Well, that has sold me! I'm going to the bank and buying some half dollar rolls today to search. I already tried dimes and was sorely disapointed.

I would have looked at the Silver and explained to her that you collect coins that are Pre-65 for ""Sentimental reasons""coins and asked if she had anymore of tht age or older and offer to buy them for face, or maybe face Plus a buck or so... See if she was willing to deal? Never know...

My mom lets me rifle though her change jars and pipck out any thing I want... I always pick out the pre-65 Stuff, any Wheaties, any State Quarters I don't have and anything interesting...

She doesn't care, she rolls it like 3-4 times a year at most and cashes it in or dumps it in the CoinStar machine at the local Grocery store...

I kinda do the same and cash in my change about twice a year after I have picked over it for anything I might want..

Although, Just for shits, I'm thinking about getting some buckets and saving all my change till I retire (or till I get sick of doing it)... Maybe two buckets for each type of coin...

Start them out in coffie cans or Mugs I have laying around, when thse get full transfer them to a 5 Gallon Bucket, when those get full transfer them to a drum of some sort...

Anyone ever thought about getting one of those CoinStar Machines???

I know it's getting dangerous to say I know anymore but I think the 90s are the no brainer investment of the decade. Hardly any premium considering real money recognizable and tremendous upside potential.
I keep trying to buy .999 bricks, but when it comes time to pick up the phone, I always go for bags. I mentally can't get past the value and recognizability advantages of 90%. Good stuff.

I used to fear that there would be a discount on 90% during a 72-hour market top, as in 1980, when things are going to the smelters in a hurry, but I think that such a top is unlikely this time around, and even if it's true, this top would occur over a baseline that's in the 3 digits anyway, and such short-lived tops they're difficult to pick.

Another bag coming this week...luff dat 90%!

On topic: for some weeks there was a movie theater in town that was charging $8.50 and giving change in halves to speed up the transactions at the booth. Vy efficient, except that the halves were all 40%. Consistently 1965-1969, for some reason. And this was when the POS made such coins worth about $0.85. My friends and I attended several fine cinematic screenings at that establishment, until the halves turned to non-Ag after about a month. Weird.

I've been trying to find a way into that action for months. Some company used to advertise on the radio (in Houston), trying to find people to invest in those things. Of course, I never wrote the number down, and now I can't find anyone who knows what I'm talking about.

Someone posted months ago that they were buying the bags of sorted coins directly from the company (coinstar maybe?). If you're still out there, post again, because I can't find your posts in any kind of search. (Mods, the search function is great, but my skills are lacking. Something like me driving a Formula One car.........too much horsepower, not enough brain power.)

Anyway, I'd be interested in any info anyone can offer.

I'm currently looking into buying a machine to put into a local grocery store. I figure when things get tough a lot of folks will be cashing in their jar of pennnies for a loaf of bread. If I can make the machine pay for itself off of the vig, any 90% I find would be gravy. Project is still in its infancy, so wish me luck. If it goes well I'll keep ya'll posted. If I fall on my face, I'll act like I never did it.

Well, I hit about 10 banks and came up with under $50 worth of half dollars. I got three 40% halfs and I have 21 Bicentenial halfs. I guess I have a few bucks to show for my time, but does anybody know if those bicentenial halfs are worth anything?
