This column has certainly covered melatonin before in different topics. Our melatonin levels fall from the time we're 18 and keep falling thru life until we have almost none by the age of 70. This is secreted by the pineal (PINE-eel) gland and is the antiaging hormone basically. When you read articles in the media you hear that is helps jet lag and b.s. like that. Actually melatonin is now being used to help cure CANCER and other so called "incurable" illnesses. Common sense tells you that if your melatonin level falls as you age you should raise it. You can test this with blood at 3:00 AM because the current saliva kits are unreliable. Soon we'll have good saliva testing for this.

You can get a 60 tablet bottle of 3 mg melatonin (don't fall for the 300 mcg doses as they are 10 times weaker than 3 milligrams -- a microgram is a millionth of a gram) for about $6. This is readily available in America fortunately. Go to Canada, Europe or Australia/New Zealand however, and you can't get it except thru a doctor with a prescription and a very overpriced pharmaceutical product. America is the only developed country in the world you can buy over the counter hormones like melatonin, DHEA, pregnenolone, and progesterone. Strangely enough most Americans over 40 are not even taking it. Why? Because they just don't realize how powerful and beneficial melatonin really is. Better health, longer life and better quality of life for $3 a month?

Melatonin is miraculous. This is a wonderful hormone. It is safe, non-toxic, there are no side effects, countless studies prove how effective it is, it's cheap, and you can buy it over the counter for pennies a day. So, why aren't you taking it if you are over 40?

Want some proof? It seems no matter what disease or condition you study melatonin keeps coming up. Especially the really epidemic diseases like cancer, diabetes and heart/artery disease. Go pick up a book in the public library such as "Your Body's Natural Wonder Drug", "Melatonin Miracle", "Melatonin: The Anti-Aging Hormone", "ABC's of Hormones" and "Stay Young the Melatonin Way".

If you ask that stupid, pompous, know nothing moronic doctor you go to for a melatonin test he won't even know what you're talking about. Plus, how is he going to do an expensive, unnecessary blood test at 3:00 AM? When are you going to realize that your family doctor is an idiot with a huge ego and an endless greed for your money? Men over 40 can use 3 mg every night and women over 40 can use 3 mg any five nights a week. You can only take melatonin at night so please do NOT take it during the day.

Mice were given melatonin in their drinking water and lived one third longer than the control mice. You are actually going to live longer, feel better and have a higher quality of life if you simply take an inexpensive OTC supplement you can buy in any drug store. Why haven't you done that? What are you waiting for? You could not buy this ten years ago because the technology did not exist for us to synthesize it inexpensively. It was a laboratory curiosity. The reason it is so inexpensive it that you need a mere 3 mg, so a 60 tablet bottle has less than a fifth of one gram in it. Better living thru chemistry as General Electric used to say.
This is a no brainer folks -- go out and buy several bottles of this if you are over 40 and start taking it.

We have been uusing Melatonin for over eight years.

It is a natural sleeping pill.

I use it when I'm traveling. Generally the first night anywhere I can't sleep. The Melatonin solves the problem.

It works for us in many ways.

What a great post LS!   :applause_ :applause_ :applause_ :clap2: :clap2: :clap2:

I have taken it, but 3mg is too much for me. It leaves me feeling groggy for half the next day. I have found that 1mg works good for getting to sleep when I need it. After 2 or 3 days, I get back to normal and don't need to take it for a while. But I usually don't have any trouble sleeping, only if I am anxious or have to get up early the next day.

Natural, animal, or bovine grade melatonin contains the actual extracts of the pineal gland. Because it comes from animal tissue, this grade of melatonin may be accompanied by viruses or proteins that could cause an antibody response. People should stay away from it.

The alternative is synthetic or pharmacy grade melatonin, which is produced from pharmaceutical grade ingredients. This form is molecularly identical to the melatonin that we produce in our own bodies, without unwanted extras.

A 3g dose is 1000-3000 times the natural melatonin level. Therefore, all you really need is a spec of it right?

I think there are better ways to have a natural sleep cycle, like exercise for example.

the article is on the merits of melatonin in "Anti-aging", sleeping well is a benefit also.

you can get valium if you want to sleep well, but it does nothing in the anti-aging category.

See the difference?

Also, when you take anything internally, and it has to pass through the liver, the dose is greatly reduced.

you might get 1/10 of the actual medicine in your blood stream.

There is no benefit to taking the 3mg over the 1mg. There has been several studies on dosage look it up on the Internet. More is not always better.
