It'll be a common-date Proof. Carefully chosen 1st spouses offer better potential.

IMO, the writing was on the wall for the '09 proof buffs (starting in Nov '08).
Since the Mint suspended sales and cancelled product everyone who missed out on the '08s began to form a line. Add the fact that the buffs were released in late Oct., one had to know that the mintage was going to be more than the '08s with a possibility of having the highest mintage since it's inception. |

I think a cancellation of the spouses is more likely. Some of these are selling in the single digits weekly. In fact there have been periods where not a single sale has been recorded.

Thanks for the update Hernancortes.
I'm hoping price goes up and more people feel the same way you do to keep the numbers reasonably low (under 50k) but I doubt it. Or maybe they will just stop selling them soon. It's all a crapshoot with the mint. I'm still happy I'll have one. I can't bring myself to buy a 1st spouse.

Considering the premium of the spouses, I am going to buy another Buffalo 09'. I have a better idea for the mint. May silver spouses will be a lot more popular. But you are right the spouses are not doing well in the past months. Actually I always buy more silver because they are cheap.

Do you have any idea on the current mintage numbers? Do you think the 09 bullion buffs will be low mintage?

2009 Bullion buffs are over 120,000 now. It's all relative to other years, and '09 will not be a low mintage year for these either. That said, as a bullion purchase they're just fine becuae they do keep their premium.

Hernando, Thanks for the info. I thought the 09 bullion buffs might have a shot at some quick appreciation. Tulving has them in 69 for $52 over spot. When I see Apmex dumping their numis, I followed suit. God bless those ebay bidders. They are in a feeding frenzy on some of my coins. I am dumping numis and making a side ways move into bullion, but I hate buying at record highs.

In light of the relatively high mintage numbers, what kind of difference do you foresee it making in value if you were to get your 2009 buffalo proof graded and it comes back at MS-70? |

I dont know the rate at which buffs grade at 70 vs. 69 (like the UHR's high rate) or else I'd say go for it unequivocally. By asking this question I'm guessing you have bought one or some already or are planning to. In this case you're first strike eligible and even though its all a major gimmick, FS does fetch a premium on ebay. In any case examine it under magnification, and if you see the slightest mark, don't bother. Even though I have seen dinged buffs in 70 holders. Hope that clears it up LOL

Hate to buy high - but then there's that chance that gold''s up and gone, and this won't be high in the long run . . . I hate decision making. At least I made the right decision to start buying a year ago, when 'high' was a few hundred dollars an ounce lower. Anybody here think $1102 a "buy" for a bullion buff, or is it too much to spend? |

I've said before that any buffalo is one to hold onto. They're 24k which gives it a more universal appeal, they're as liquid as any coin out there, they've had production halts and hiccups which have vaulted premiums. And if you have a llitle money, it's still possile to build a complete series since it's so young, I think there's only 15 or so coins in it total so far. The '09 is no King, but get one for your collection

What do you mean? My reason to buy one is that I wanted one. No other reason. But if the mint ceases production with a low mintage, how is that bad for someone who's got one?

Well they're $50 more this week so I'm happy I bought one on the 29th. Maybe the price increase will dampen sales. All those waiting for a lower price will probably continue to wait until/if it goes down. Be nice if they didn't go over 50k but....

"The total number of coins sold to date is now 32,271. This is comprised of 19,468 coins sold during the opening three days, then 8,487 coins sold during the following week, and 4,316 coins sold in the most recent week ending November 15."
http://mintnewsblog.blogspot.com/200...roof-gold.html Next week if gold climbs just $10-15 more they will cost $1460. That will slow the sales down even more. My guess is they will finish up lower than 07 Proof mintage of 59,998.
