I have to disagree, gaffer. They're concerned about climate change, yes, but the emphasis is on Peak Oil and the necessary community changes it will bring. The concept of resilience is not far off from preparedness even if the point of origin is different. By practicing behaviors that require less dependence on distant or unsustainable resources they increase their odds of surviving a systemic shock. Having gardens and teaching children how to grow food is no different than what many GIMers do already.

Even some of the coastal areas, such as "West Marin," are unsustainable. Despite their proximity to lots of water (the ocean), none of it is drinkable. Such communities are bloated beyond carrying capacity, as hobbyist ranchers and leisure-lifestyle elitists moved into such areas in the last several decades. If we do run out of (cheap) oil, two things must happen: first, the populations of the big cities each must disperse to hundreds of small, rural towns; second, many, many millions are going to have to die. That's not an inhuman wish; it's an observation of the full-scope implications of an end to readily-available energy.

I can see them being transition cities. Transition from being alive to being dead.
