Community preps gone viral, these are the same two vids, but I can't figure out how to edit out the dupe.

The courage we need is to refuse authority and to accept only personally responsible decisions. Like war, growth at any cost is an outmoded and discredited concept. It is therefore our only possible decision to withhold all support for destructive systems, and to cease to invest our lives in our own annihilation.

I have to disagree, gaffer. They're concerned about climate change, yes, but the emphasis is on Peak Oil and the necessary community changes it will bring. The concept of resilience is not far off from preparedness even if the point of origin is different. By practicing behaviors that require less dependence on distant or unsustainable resources they increase their odds of surviving a systemic shock. Having gardens and teaching children how to grow food is no different than what many GIMers do already.

Whoa, these people aren't serious, are they? Los Angeles? Portland? Denver? Seattle? Large cities, concrete jungles, really, are the antithesis of "sustainability." "Sustainability" for such cities is, basically, rendering them ghost towns. They are each solidly dependent upon thousands upon thousands of acres, for dozens or even hundreds of miles out, for food & supplies of every sort. If these people are serious, I hope they're discussing moving, and not fantasies of clinging on to megalopolii.

Even some of the coastal areas, such as "West Marin," are unsustainable. Despite their proximity to lots of water (the ocean), none of it is drinkable. Such communities are bloated beyond carrying capacity, as hobbyist ranchers and leisure-lifestyle elitists moved into such areas in the last several decades.

If we do run out of (cheap) oil, two things must happen: first, the populations of the big cities each must disperse to hundreds of small, rural towns; second, many, many millions are going to have to die. That's not an inhuman wish; it's an observation of the full-scope implications of an end to readily-available energy.

I can see them being transition cities. Transition from being alive to being dead.
