There are actually too many to list. I think that's the point of this whole forum and what we are all getting ready for. It can and will happen anywhere and everywhere at some point.

I think I'd be careful to discriminate between manmade SHTF and non-manmade.
In a natural event-nevermind the chaotic subcurrents, you're "in it together".
In manmade- well, let's just say it woulda sucked being Jewish in much of Europe in the 1930's. NOT in it together.
In a manmade event it might be wise to prep for a big one-way bug out. You could probably see it coming.
In a natural event it seems less sure a bugout is required-just less warning to count on in many cases.

Maybe it should be distinguisehed between SHTF, and collapse of civilization. In southern france they were taking boulders from old Roman aqueducts to build stone houses. With no empire, it was common for marauders to travel inland upriver and make raids, stealing sons and daughters as slaves.

Hasn't there been 20-something cases of hyperinflation in the last 50 years? I would even be interested in a list of those countries that I could go research and read about.

Millions of SHTF's are happening every day... lives ending due to disease, accidents, heart attacks, murders, etc.
You can't tell me the S isn't hitting the F for those people!

Seriously, though, you really need to focus in on the shape of the SHTF you are thinking is most likely to occur before you can find the best historical case to study.

i think one of the more interesting cases will be when another large quake occurs in California.

the state does not have the resources to recover, and would need to depend on the US government. then again, do you want to depend on someone whose idea of wealth is to create money electronically.

the Northridge quake, a 7.0, i think cost $100 billion to recover from. Mother Nature can dish out an 8.0 quake quite easily.

what happens if Calif. gets a large quake after the federal government announces they can't bail out states anymore ? an 8.0 quake with repair bills in the $500 billion range ?

Wow, that's a really nice area.

I visited Mount Rainier about a month ago. it's beautiful, but i guess in Seattle you need to be prepared for volcano eruptions and earthquakes.

i looked at a Canada government website a few years ago, deep down buried in the website was a blurb about an 8.0+ striking in BC, as in, "well, basically, we expect this to happen any day now. could be tomorrow, could be 30 years."

those huge mountains didn't get created without some major earth tremors.

There is an important factor here. NONE of those events listed resulted in total collapse. So many here talk as though there will be no government, but history has shown that this does not happen. The lists presented here testify to that fact.

There's no Gov't in a Cat 5. There's just you and "Him" and the sound of things coming apart! That's enough SHTF for me!
